How to get Google find your website?
Many people entering the digital world are wondering how Google and other search engines work. Many customers ask us for example “how do I get Google to find my site?”
One way is by registering the sitemap.xml in Google Search Console.
Google has its preferred model and most suitable of all for indexing sites, the registration of sitemap.xml in Google Search Console (GSC).
Although this is the most well-known and recommended model, it is impressive the number of sites that have not yet used the method, either for not having an XML Sitemap, or for having, but not registering with the GSC.
This is probably the most effective way to get Google to index a site, as you deliver in an organized manner all pages on the site (or almost all, listing at least the most important ones).
Although Sitemap XML is the most suitable, Google accepts other formats, such as a simple text file (sitemap.txt), with a list of URLs for your site, one per line. That simple. Just upload this file via Search Console as well. There’s no excuse for not having a sitemap there.
If you still want an XML Sitemap, you can use a tool like WriteMaps for that. At the Digital Marketing Academy, in the SEO module, we have a class explaining how to use the tool that, among other resources, generates a sitemap.xml from the site architecture you build.
In the past, the GSC had the option to crawl like Google. Now, he no longer has this option and when you want a URL to be indexed more quickly, you need to go to GSC and click on ‘URL inspection’ and put the URL in the search box that will be highlighted. After entering the URL there and searching, you can see if the page is indexed or not. If not, you can request indexing.
How to make Google find your site
Those methods serve, not only for a website to be discovered but also for its deeper pages, which means more distant (in a number of clicks) from the homepage to be discovered. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that each page listed will be indexed, but it is certainly a great opportunity in your hand.
Strengthen your links
For Google to find your site, it will need a link that takes Googlebot to the specific site or page. Since Google also uses links from other sites to find new pages, you can comment on popular blogs or forums (regardless of whether you use “nofollow” on those sites) and use your website address as a signature.
However, something that is important and should not be forgotten: if you choose to use this path, do not overdo it, do not abuse anchor text and do not enter into link exchange schemes.
All you need is just a link. Do you have a website that you like, follow and have a valuable comment to add to the content? Great, use a comment on this site and you’re done. You do not need and should not exaggerate, commenting a lot on this and other sites and blogs.
Promote the link of your sites on social networks
In addition to Google search, use other channels to help the search engine see your site as a reference. You can rely on social networks like Twitter, YouTube or others that don’t block Google’s crawl.
The bonus of these alternative methods is that your site can already reach the public directly and receive visits from other channels, while Google will read the Sitemap and browse the site to find the pages, rank and start showing in the search results.
Have clean code
Crawling and indexing your website can be made easier if your website’s backend is “clean”, in other words, if it is organized and you make sure you have the compatible World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) code, a standard for the creation of structural content. Never swell your code. Make sure that the content of your website is within a good HTML structure.
Performance of your site
What can you do to make your website even more responsive? Review the images, if you can make them smaller, do so. Also, check for plugins or other applications that are making pages heavier.
Make corrections and, with that, it will help Google’s robots to make reading much more agile and effective, as well as prioritizing the good experience of users – which will raise your quality score.
